Dr. Yang Waikiki: FDA Approves a New and Safe Injectable Medication for Weight Loss

Dr. Yang Waikiki: U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Throws A Lifeline For Adults with Obesity

As a breakthrough in weight loss management, the FDA recently approved Wegovy (semaglutide) injection.  Wegovy is the first drug the FDA has approved for weight-loss management since 2014.  This once-a-week injection drug will help adults with obesity or overweight with or without coexisting illnesses such as high blood pressure, diabetes type 2, etc., to dramatically decrease their weight.

Wegovy or the generic name semaglutide has already been used widely to treat diabetes type 2 under a different brand Ozempic for several years.  Many diabetic patients have been able to significantly lower their blood sugars and risk for cardiovascular complications such as stroke, heart attack and kidney failure while using Ozempic.  Of course, the same diabetic patients have also been able to significantly lower their weight which can lower their insulin resistance and other biochemical factors that drive diabetes type 2.  Semaglutide, the main biochemical component of Wegovy or Ozempic, is a molecule that is almost identical to GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) that is produced by the small intestine and improves the function of insulin and glucagon, the main hormones that control glucose (sugar) metabolism and produced naturally produced by the body, in response to meals and fasting. In another words, unlike artificial insulin or other oral medications the GLP-1 is a smart biochemical messenger that assists in mimicking or restoring the normal glucose metabolism in the body.

You should have a body mass index (BMI) of 27 or greater to use the drug injected under the skin.  You can use the BMI calculator in this link https://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/educational/lose_wt/BMI/bmicalc.htm to find out what your BMI is based on your weight and height. In addition, Wegovy can be even more effective if you engage in the keto diet and exercise.  You can learn more about keto diet by following this link: https://dryang-hawaii.com/weight-loss/

Dr. Yang Waikiki: How To Use Wegovy

While Wegovy is likely to be a lifeline for overweight or obese patients, you can’t use it together with:

  • Semaglutide-containing products (i.e. Ozempic)
  • Other GLP 1 receptor agonists  (Trulicity, Victoza, etc.)
  • Other products for weight loss, such as over-the-counter drugs and herbal products

Dr. Yang Waikiki: Patients Who Should Not Use Wegovy

There’s a group of patients who shouldn’t use Wegovy, including:

  • History of severe allergic reactions to semaglutide
  • History of pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), cholecystitis (inflammation of the gallbladder), gallstones
  • History of chronic hypoglycemia (diseases of low sugar level)
  • History of acute kidney injury
  • History of diabetic retinopathy
  • History of suicidal behavior and thinking

Dr. Yang Waikiki: Other Wegovy Common-side Effects

Using Wegovy may cause these common side effects:

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Abdominal (stomach) pain
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Dyspepsia (indigestion)
  • Dizziness

Although Wegovy has passed through several rigorous clinical trials, you need to consult specialists like Dr. Yang Waikiki to determine if you qualify for the medication based on your BMI and chronic conditions for effective and safe use of Wegovy.   You need a prescription from the doctor.
